Be Well Fund recipients named

In one of the most successful RFPs in company history, Microsoft named 15 recipients of its Be Well Fund out of nearly 200 proposals from leading academic and research organizations across the United States. In response to this strong interest, Microsoft increased award funding from $3 million to $4.5 million to bring these innovative ideas to market.

The 15 recipients proposed inventive solutions that address vital issues such as childhood obesity, medication reconciliation, gathering and dissemination of mobile health information, diabetes management, and ways to help people manage their health more effectively.

"The Be Well Fund winners share our vision of using the Internet to empower people to fully engage in managing their health and improving health outcomes," said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president of the Health Solutions Group at Microsoft Corporation. "We're excited to help these organizations turn their ideas into reality."

Spotlight

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association developed the Blood Pressure Management Center with a goal to reduce uncontrolled high blood pressure by 25 percent by 2010.

The Center accesses information from HealthVault to track blood pressure, as well as weight, physical activity, and more. Users can view their data in colorful charts and tables, and access related news and tips.

Congratulations to the American Heart Association for providing an exceptional health solution to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Product and Technical

HealthVault helps optimize security and privacy

Two of the biggest challenges facing the industry with respect to online health information are privacy and security.

To this end, Microsoft developed HealthVault with a core commitment to privacy. Each HealthVault record is created and controlled by the user. Individuals decide what goes into their HealthVault record and who can access it on a case-by-case basis.

Microsoft helps to protect health information in two ways: by factoring security and privacy throughout the development process, and by engaging in internal and external audits. The "minimal access" data model permits information to be shared only with user consent. HealthVault maintains a log each time a record is written, changed, or read, including a list of people authorized to view an individual's account. We isolate traffic in our data centers onto a virtually separate network, and our servers are housed in locked cabinets. Additionally, all data traffic is encrypted. Backup data is also encrypted, and its transportation is logged.

Easy information exchange with DOPU

Sometimes it can be unnecessary or inconvenient to create an ongoing relationship between a HealthVault record and a clinical system. In such situations, institutions, laboratories or state agencies can give information to patients by simply using our new HealthVault Drop-off/Pick-up feature.

Microsoft HealthVault Logo Program for Devices

As a part of the Microsoft HealthVault ingredient brand strategy, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Works with Microsoft HealthVault Logo Program for Devices. The logo, available in both black-and-white and four-color versions, differentiates health and fitness devices in the marketplace and gives consumers the confidence that the device has been tested to work with HealthVault.

To take advantage of the device logo, a health and fitness device must pass a device certification test. Once certified, manufacturers can use the logo in marketing materials, advertising, retail point-of-purchase displays, Web, hardware, and packaging.
